On behalf of European startups, we have issued an open letter to the European Data Protection Board
To ensure that European startups can continue to use AI and data innovatively, we have, on their behalf, issued an open letter to the European Data Protection Board (EDPB). This letter calls for a balanced approach to using personal data in AI model training—one that safeguards citizens' privacy while fostering a strong innovation environment in Europe. Our goal is to prevent regulations from unintentionally limiting small businesses’ growth potential and, instead, support their ability to compete and thrive on a global scale.
Across Europe, startups are increasingly concerned about the EDPB’s upcoming stance on the use of personal data for AI model training. Strict regulations could limit small companies’ ability to develop and deploy AI tools, such as chatbots, that depend on relevant data to be effective. Without a thoughtful regulatory approach, startups may face a disproportionate compliance burden, which could stifle their growth and dampen Europe’s innovation potential.
As Europe stands at a crucial point in the AI revolution, it is vital that the EDPB’s position enables innovation rather than driving it out of the EU. Startups need clear and practical guidance to remain competitive globally and to ensure that Europe retains its leadership in technology and innovation.
